A Brief History of Harriman, NY

The Village of Harriman bears the name of one of the most powerful railroad barons and financiers of the Gilded Age: Edward Henry Harriman. E.H. Harriman rose from modest beginnings to dominate the American railroad industry, eventually controlling both the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads. He chose the hills and forests of Orange County as his personal domain, establishing his vast estate, Arden House, on the slopes above the valley that would bear his name.

In 1910, the Harriman family made a remarkable gift to the State of New York: more than 10,000 acres of their private land to establish Harriman State Park. This donation — one of the largest private gifts of land to a state in American history — created what is now the second-largest state park in New York, covering approximately 47,000 acres of forested hills, lakes, and trails in Orange and Rockland counties.

The Village of Harriman was incorporated in 1914, growing around the Erie Railroad's Harriman station as a commercial and residential hub for the surrounding area. The railroad connection to New York City made Harriman accessible to commuters and visitors, and the village developed a distinctive character as both a working community and a gateway to the natural splendor of Harriman State Park. Today the village remains a vital Orange County hub, enhanced by its proximity to the I-87 New York State Thruway and Woodbury Common Premium Outlets.

What Harriman Is Known For

Harriman punches far above its size as a village — positioned between one of the nation's great state parks and one of the country's busiest outlet shopping centers.

Harriman State Park

The second-largest state park in New York at approximately 47,000 acres, Harriman State Park offers over 200 miles of hiking trails, 31 lakes and reservoirs, and year-round outdoor recreation. The park's origin as a gift from the Harriman family is one of the great philanthropic stories in New York history.

Woodbury Common Premium Outlets

Just minutes from Harriman Village, Woodbury Common in Central Valley is one of the country's largest and most visited outlet shopping centers, drawing millions of visitors annually from throughout the Northeast and beyond.

Erie Railroad Heritage

Harriman grew around the Erie Railroad's station, which connected the village to New York City and made it a viable suburban community. The railroad's legacy shaped the commercial character of Harriman and remains part of its historical identity.

I-87 Thruway Access

Harriman's location near the I-87 New York State Thruway makes it an exceptionally convenient base for commuters heading to the New York City metro area. Exit 16 of the Thruway has transformed the surrounding area into a busy regional hub.

Arden House & E.H. Harriman Legacy

Arden House, the former Harriman family estate in the hills above the village, is now a conference center operated by Columbia University. The grand estate stands as a reminder of the Gilded Age railroad wealth that shaped this part of Orange County.

"Great local service. Our LG washing machine had a major error code and I thought we'd need to replace it. The technician diagnosed it correctly in minutes, ordered the part, and returned two days later to complete the repair for much less than a new machine. Very happy."
