A Brief History of Sullivan County, NY

Sullivan County was formed in 1809 from a portion of Ulster County and named in honor of General John Sullivan, the Revolutionary War officer whose 1779 military campaign against the Iroquois Confederacy opened much of upstate New York to settlement. In the early 19th century, the county's vast timber resources and position along the Delaware River made it an important center for logging, tanning, and river commerce. By the Civil War era, thousands of workers had stripped the Catskill hillsides for hemlock bark used in tanneries that supplied leather to a growing nation.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries brought a new identity to Sullivan County as a summer resort destination for New York City's Jewish immigrant communities. The Catskill Mountains — cool, clean, and accessible by rail from the city — became home to hundreds of boardinghouses, bungalow colonies, and grand hotels that catered to working-class and middle-class families seeking relief from urban summers. By mid-century, this phenomenon had grown into the legendary "Borscht Belt," a thriving resort culture centered in towns like Fallsburg, Monticello, and Liberty, where comedians including Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Crystal, Mel Brooks, and countless others honed their craft.

The cultural legacy of the Borscht Belt was forever intertwined with global history on August 15–18, 1969, when the town of Bethel, Sullivan County, hosted the Woodstock Music & Art Fair on Max Yasgur's dairy farm. Nearly half a million people converged on the rolling fields of White Lake, making Woodstock one of the defining cultural events of the 20th century. The site is now home to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a premier outdoor music venue and museum that preserves the Woodstock legacy.

Today, Sullivan County is experiencing a renaissance. The opening of Resorts World Catskills casino resort in 2018 brought new economic activity to Monticello, while the arts communities of Narrowsburg and Livingston Manor, the fly-fishing culture of the Catskill streams, and the scenic Delaware River corridor continue to attract residents, visitors, and businesses. A growing population of telecommuters and second-home owners has further revitalized communities across the county, making Sullivan County one of the most dynamic rural counties in New York State.
