A Brief History of West Point, NY

West Point has been a strategically vital location since the Revolutionary War, when its position above a sharp bend in the Hudson River made it the key to controlling river traffic between New York City and Albany. During the Revolution, Patriots stretched the famous Great Chain — a massive iron chain weighing approximately 186 tons — across the river at West Point to block British warships from passing northward. The chain, links of which are still displayed at Trophy Point, stands as one of the most tangible reminders of the region's Revolutionary War heritage.

In 1802, Congress established the United States Military Academy at West Point, creating what would become the oldest continuously occupied military post in the United States. Under the leadership of General Sylvanus Thayer, who served as Superintendent from 1817 to 1833 and is known as the "Father of the Military Academy," West Point was transformed into a world-class institution of military science and engineering. The curriculum Thayer established became the model for engineering education throughout the United States.

USMA's alumni roster reads like a catalog of American military history: Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee (both Class of 1843's era), William Tecumseh Sherman, George Armstrong Custer, John J. Pershing, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, and George S. Patton all walked the grounds of West Point. The Academy continues to commission officers for the United States Army today.

What West Point Is Known For

West Point is far more than a military campus — it is a community rich in history, dramatic natural scenery, and living tradition.

United States Military Academy (USMA)

Founded in 1802, USMA is one of the oldest and most prestigious military colleges in the world. The Academy sits on a commanding promontory above the Hudson River and has shaped American military leadership for over two centuries. Its famous graduates include Grant, Lee, Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Patton.

Trophy Point & The Great Chain

Trophy Point offers one of the most breathtaking views of the Hudson River gorge in the entire Valley. Here, visitors can see links of the original Revolutionary War Great Chain, which was stretched across the river in 1778 to block British ships. The view from Trophy Point is among the finest in New York State.

West Point Museum

The West Point Museum is the oldest and largest military museum in the United States, with collections spanning military history from ancient times to the present. Admission is free and open to the public, making it one of the most accessible world-class museums in the Hudson Valley.

Michie Stadium & Army Football

Michie Stadium, perched above the Hudson River with the West Point campus as a backdrop, is one of the most scenic football venues in America. Army Black Knights football games are a beloved tradition, drawing fans from across the region to this storied hillside stadium.

Eisenhower Hall

Eisenhower Hall is USMA's performing arts center — one of the largest theaters in New York State. It hosts concerts, Broadway touring productions, speakers, and cadet events throughout the year, bringing world-class performances to the Hudson Highlands.

Hudson River Gorge & Constitution Island

West Point sits at the narrowest and most dramatic section of the Hudson River, where the river cuts through the Hudson Highlands. Constitution Island, just across the river, was also a Revolutionary War fortification and is now a nature preserve accessible by ferry from West Point during the summer months.
